Identification of Extreme Wind Events Using a Weather Type Classification

نویسندگان

چکیده

The identification of extreme wind events and their driving forces are crucial to better integrating generation into the power system. Recent work related occurrence with some weather circulation patterns, enabling (i) ramps (ii) low-generation as well intrinsic features, such intensity time duration. Using Portugal a case study, this focuses on application classification-type methodology link conditions generation, namely, different types events. A long-term period is used assess characterize changes in corresponding production. High variability expected under cyclonic regimes, whereas most common anticyclonic regimes. results provide significant insights regarding production Portugal, an increase its predictability.

A climatology of low level wind regimes over Central America using a weather type classification approach

Based on the potential of the weather types classification method to study synoptic features, this study proposes the application of such methodology for the identification of the main large scale patterns related with weather in Central America. Using ERA Interim low-level winds in a domain that encompasses the intra-Americas sea, the eastern tropical Pacific, southern North America, Central A...

Analysis of Weather Generators: Extreme Events

Stochastic weather generators (WGs) are often used to simulate synthetic weather time series based on observed statistical properties in a particular location. Most studies evaluate WG skill based on average properties. Our objective is to assess how the WGs performs in simulating extremes, especially high precipitation amounts. We analyzed 13 different WGs using two parallel approaches: extrem...

Extreme Weather Events, Mortality and Migration

We estimate the effect of extreme weather on life expectancy in the US. Using high frequency mortality data, we find that both extreme heat and extreme cold result in immediate increases in mortality. However, the increase in mortality following extreme heat appears entirely driven by near-term displacement, while the increase in mortality following extreme cold is long lasting. The aggregate e...

Resolution Dependence in Modeling Extreme Weather Events

At Argonne National Laboratory we have developed a high performance regional climate modeling simulation capability based on the NCAR MM5v3.4. The regional climate simulation system at Argonne currently includes a Java-based interface to allow rapid selection and generation of initial and boundary conditions, a high-performance version of MM5v3.4 modified for long climate simulations on our 512...

Improved forecasts of extreme weather events by future space borne Doppler wind lidar

Introduction An important goal in operational weather forecasting is to reduce the number of forecast failures, in particular those with large socio economic impact. Forecast failures of high-impact weather are often due to lack of observations over data sparse areas, such as the southern hemisphere, Tropics and Northern hemisphere oceans, over a prolonged period prior to the extreme event. Int...
